Chiropractic and Healing from Trauma
We’ve been reflecting on our role as chiropractors - “doctors of the nervous system” - in this time when quite a few nervous systems are really frayed by trauma.
Trauma - personal, ancestral, collective - is held in our bodies and particularly in our nervous systems. The body is our interface with the world and as Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estes teaches, the loyal consort of our soul.
It is through the body that we perceive, receive, respond, react, connect, evolve, love and heal. Notice how your body engages with the world and even tells the story of your inner world - how you hold yourself, how you contract or expand in the presence of others, how you breathe…and use your body sensations as a barometer for how you really are. This self awareness will help you so much on the healing journey.
Body-centered awareness and healing are thus not just for current physical injuries and discomforts, but truly for the soul. And the chiropractic adjustment is more than an effective technique for resolving pain in the physical body. It is a pattern interruptor. The contact - whether an actual audible crack/pop/set or a light specific touch - stimulates the nervous system with new information. This new information interrupts conditioned responses that have become unconscious reactions and grooves of thoughts, feelings, behaviors, pains and traumas.
You may also experience during an office visit or soon after, a deeper connection to your soul or higher self. This may manifest as a greater sense of wellbeing, a wider emotional bandwidth, increased moments of synchronicity or flow state, more ease in your relationships, and so forth. Drs. Mike and Jennifer offer both traditional and Network chiropractic, as well as soft tissue work for healing musculo-skeletal conditions.
You may notice that as you heal, there is (in Resmaa Menakem’s words in My Grandmother’s Hands: Racialized Trauma and the Pathway to Mending Our Hearts and Bodies) “a little extra room in your nervous system for flow, for resilience, for coherence, for growth, and, above all, for possibility. That extra room may then get passed on to your children or to other people you encounter.”
By the way, we highly recommend Resmva Menakem’s book as a healing companion. There are practical strategies for shifting generations of trauma that we all carry in our bodies.
